The scene
I gather you've seen a great deal of maritime combat Rum! If you don’t mind my asking, whom were you fighting and… to what end?
That would depend on which war you are referring to, private.
You've fought more than one?
I've seen three in my time. The war forgotten, the fight for survival and finally this cosmic conflict we find ourselves in today.
The war forgotten? How do you forget a war? And moreover how do you label it as forgotten if you forgot about it??
Tis but a name son. We less forget the war as much as we collectively cast it aside. But we forgive and forget the choices once made so, it is a forgotten war.
Did you forget... What that war was about?
Land my boy, land. A scarce commodity on my planet which grew scarcer still with a growing populace and rising sea level.
Our kingdom of wax clashed against an empire of chalk as we squabbled over isles and archipelagos.
And then everyone just... Gave up!? All at once?
In a sense. When the black tide rose, the color of your coat or the quality of your flesh seemed a trivial point of delineation.
What about the Tide made you all get along? A common threat?
A foe most horrid. As the black tide rose, so did the corpses of dead men and the shambling wreckages of ships once sunk.
These reanimated dregs saw no color nor creed, and only sought to drown that which had yet to sink.
And so a new war began.
That’s terrible Rum. I’m so sorry.
Don’t be son. We forge on, come what may. And besides, I’m glad not to have wasted my life fighting folk who eventually would become my crew!
